What are Dental Veneers?

Dental veneers are shells made out of either porcelain or composite resin material. They are bonded to the teeth and blend in nicely. Veneers match the shade and color of your natural teeth, giving patients that perfect natural looking white smile. Typically, veneers are used for patients that have misshapen, stained, uneven, or chipped teeth. Veneers are not permanent, but they are durable, and last between 10-15 years.

Who is a Good Candidate for Veneers?

Patients that have discoloration from multiple dental procedures are typically good candidates for veneers. Patients with stains from food or prescription drugs can also benefit. Veneers can be used to create an even smile, close gaps between teeth, and look natural in the mouth. Gum tissue tolerates porcelain veneers very well, and veneers are stain resistant.

How are Veneers Applied?

Veneers typically take more than one appointment. A preliminary consultation discusses goals and determines a customized treatment plan, including x-rays. On a return visit, a portion of the tooth enamel is removed to prepare the teeth. Molds are taken and sent to a lab. Once the veneers are ready, fit and color are checked. The teeth are thoroughly cleaned, and a special cement is used to place the veneers, hardened with an ultraviolet light. The process takes a few weeks and multiple appointments, with a follow-up visit afterward.

What Type of Veneers are Available?

Porcelain Veneers: Durable, made of ceramic, matched exactly to the shade of your natural teeth. The most common type; preserves as much existing tooth as possible.

Lumineers: A porcelain veneer requiring minimal tooth preparation; thinner material, easily applied, can be placed without injections or anesthesia.

Composite Resin: Same results as porcelain but less expensive (budget-friendly). Helps with chips, teeth length, and gaps. Shorter lifespan than porcelain; minimal tooth preparation.
