If you are over the age of thirty you are included in the 90% of us who suffer some level of gum disease.  That’s quite a revealing statistic and it says a lot about the way we care for our dental health, but what’s even more surprising is that 65% of the teen population is also affected.

Gum disease is the result of a buildup of the bacterial plaque that forms on our teeth every day.  The only way to remove that plaque is to brush and floss twice a day and see a dentist on a regular basis.  In other words, a lack of proper dental care will lead to gum disease and eventually to the loss of permanent teeth.  As if that’s not bad enough, the inflammation from the disease can spread to other parts of the body putting us at risk for many other health issues including cancer, heart disease and stroke.

When you consider the serious consequences of gum disease it seems inconceivable that anyone would ignore their dental health.  Unfortunately however, the fact is that a lot of people aren’t aware of the symptoms.  Early education is the best way to turn that around.  The American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry recommends that children begin seeing a dentist as soon as the primary teeth begin to erupt.
